There they go: BSS Class of 2017

It was an extraordinary day, the culmination of years of hard work, passion and discovery from girls who have transformed into young women. Our Class of 2017 – made up of 118 students with a range of backgrounds and future plans – have graduated from BSS in our 150th anniversary year. The June 16 festivities started in the Chapel where each girl processed into the beautiful space carrying a candle and wearing one red rose. There, Rev. Cathy welcomed families and friends with inspiring words, reminding the girls that “There is a spirit that connects you, wherever you go… you can be there for each other.” Music from the Senior Strings filled the air, followed by a rousing song by the UCC-BSS cast of the Spring Musical.

Everyone moved down to the Warren Road Gym to hear students share heartfelt words of farewell to our retiring staff, including Head of School Deryn Lavell who, in her last address to the community as BSS Head of School, told the girls: “You are a force to be reckoned with. You give me hope.” The level of exceptional student contribution and achievement was in great evidence as award after award was presented to dozens of girls proudly accepting their recognition or scholarships. After receiving their diplomas, the girls stood strong together in their white blazers to sing an emotional version of Miley Cyrus’s Wherever I Go, arranged and accompanied on piano by David Atkinson and conducted by Laura Fitzpatrick, both members of the BSS Music Department. Jamie Marcello, the Class Valedictorian, did a wonderful job, sharing some important advice with her fellow grads: “No matter where life takes you, you must always be aware of the difference your voice makes. Don’t let it be silenced.” Our Food Services Department put on a sumptuous display of food and drink for guests as they moved from the basement gym into the sunshine of the Head’s Quad, Student Quad and Student Centre to talk, laugh and hug.

Thanks to BSS staff who worked hard to make such a memorable day for our grads, and to our guests and our ever impressive graduates. As you move on from BSS, know we believe in you always.
