3 Ways Our All Girls School Fosters Lifelong Friendships

Students at The Bishop Strachan School join a welcoming community that supports the development of the whole person, creating opportunities for lifelong friendships. Your school friends are a network of support that will see you through your personal and professional futures. In an inclusive and welcoming community, every student at BSS is given the chance to form meaningful relationships both inside and outside of the classroom. Read on to discover the opportunities for students to gain lifelong friends at BSS.

A Community for Everyone

Students at BSS come together to form close bonds with diverse peers from around the world, celebrating their differences and finding support in one another. Our many co-curricular activities, academic groups and support services make it easy for every student to find a community for them.

In celebrating an open, multi-faith environment, our all girls school offers numerous affinity and ally groups, including the Black, Asian, Jewish and Muslim Student Unions, the Gender Sexuality Alliance and more. Through interest groups in areas such as the Arts, Environment, Mental Health and Athletics Councils, students can connect with each other over the activities and causes that matter most to them. Whatever their interest, students at BSS are sure to find rewarding friendships with like-minded peers.

To help every student access a caring and inclusive environment, students from JK to Grade 12 are assigned to one of our 12 Houses. These serve as a small family within the school that gives students the chance to engage socially with others across different grades in many fun and supportive activities throughout the year.

Encouraging Academic Collaboration

Learning alongside one another is an experience that bonds students together. The academic experience at BSS is one that encourages students to communicate with and support each other throughout their studies. This begins at an early age, where friendships are cultivated inside the classroom. Small classes are the perfect environment for students to voice their own opinions and listen to the experiences of others. It is an opportunity for them to learn about their peers, understand the perspectives of others, and value the support of their fellow students.

Through academic collaboration, students learn to value the collective power of a group to accomplish challenges together. At the same time, they develop teamwork, empathy and communication skills, important qualities that will help your child form healthy, lasting relationships.

Making Memories Outside the Classroom

A wide variety of experiences give our students the chance to connect with one another beyond their usual environment and form lasting memories. For example, students at our Middle School for girls can complete the Statten-Northway Award, an outdoor education program that emphasizes teamwork through physical activity. Activities include hikes to a nearby ravine, attending a team-building camp or an overnight expedition into the wilderness.

Global Learning projects are other opportunities for students to travel with one another for service initiatives or social action plans. Students at BSS create unforgettable memories with their peers, graduating with a supportive network for life.
