4 Ways We Prioritize Student Mental Health at Our All Girls School

The Bishop Strachan School understands that many variables affect mental health. At BSS, we make sure we provide our students with support and encouragement from faculty, staff and fellow students, both inside and outside of the classroom. As a result, BSS graduates are confident, resilient and ready to lead, making the most of every opportunity. Continue reading to discover how current BSS students are supported by our school’s commitment to mental health.

1. Student Counsellors Provide Professional Support

Each Senior School student has a guidance counsellor and find meeting and connecting with their counsellor extremely helpful in a number of situations. From when they first begin to choose their courses in Grade 9 at BSS to when they graduate their counsellor is there with them, every step of the way and students realize that the support they need is close by and that they learn to lean on their support systems in a healthy way. Additionally, meeting with their counsellors helps students determine what their strengths are on the path to pursuing their own interests and goals.

2. Staff Get Involved with Teacher Advisory Groups (TAG)

At our all girls school, students participate in advisory programs that help them make connections with others on campus. This involves meeting on a weekly basis with a faculty member in small groups. Senior School students participate in Teacher Advisory Groups (TAG), which are a space for students to come together with the same advisor from Grade 9 to Grade 12. Over these formative years, students form strong bonds with their advisors, who come to understand their learning styles, interests, goals and character traits. Students are encouraged to discuss any challenges they may be facing, and they benefit from this personalized level of support.

3. Community Building at Every Opportunity at Our Day School for Girls

As students collaborate with their peers inside the classroom, they begin to form strong bonds with their classmates that often last a lifetime. Outside of their own classes, they connect with BSS’ student body even further through House assignments. Each student from JK to Grade 12 is assigned to one of 12 BSS Houses, joining a smaller community within the school that encourages informal interactions with girls from other grades. This way, students form a greater sense of community outside of who they may attend their classes with. This connection between grades further promotes the acceptance, encouragement, and support of each student at our day school for girls.

4. Physical Education to Support the Mind

Another important component that supports students’ mental health is physical activity. At BSS, we believe in the value of physical activity to promote the well-being of both the mind and body – especially when students find a form of physical activity that brings them joy! Our campus facilities are well-equipped to ensure students have everything they need to dive into their chosen activity. With the ability to choose from physical activities in the pool, in one of our gymnasiums, on the rock climbing wall, in the dance or yoga studios, or on the playground, students can find a healthy outlet to move their bodies and support both their physical and mental health.
