Thoughts on Moral Courage

It all started with a visit from author and activist Irshad Manji (above with students in 2014) who came to BSS for the first time in 2012 to speak with students, staff and parents. As professor of Moral Courage at NYU, Irshad had deep insights and experiences to share with BSS in the development of our Moral Courage Project, and the students’ Moral Courage Task Force (MCTF). “Moral Courage means standing up when other people want you to sit down,” says Irshad. Every year, the Task Force, supported by Lead Teacher Andrea Mozarowski, welcomes new student members. And every year, they address new challenges, enter into difficult conversations and develop new skills in listening and standing up for what they believe in. Read about recent grad Emma Lavery’s experience as a Task Force member and how Katrina MARSDEN ’15 made an impact on the whole school with her Moral Courage activity. Watch video below to hear directly from Irshad and our ‘interactivists’.
