A BRIEF HISTORY

BSS: Celebrating 150 Years

We don’t look our age, it’s true. But here we are, celebrating 150 years of excellence in education. Founded in the year of Canada’s Confederation, we can look back proudly at having moved girls’ education out of the dark ages and into the stratosphere. As we mark our 150th, we honour every student who has passed through our doors – from the first day of school in 1867 to this September. It’s been quite a ride – and we want you on it as we celebrate all that has come before, and all that is yet to be.

Follow our journey from the shovel in the ground in May 2014 through years of construction to our 150th kick-off event in Sept 2016 and a year of celebration to September 12, 2017.

To great applause, the ribbon on our new wing is ceremoniously cut by: Head Girl Victoria Valentine; Board Chair Cindy TRIPP ’82; the Honourable Elizabeth Dowdsewell, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario; SK student Sapphire T; and Head of School Judith Carlisle.

""

Head of School Judith Carlisle welcomed the community to the September 12, 2017 birthday celebration, saying “We didn’t get to be Canada’s oldest day and boarding independent school for girls, without taking risks and taking a stand for girls and women.” Read full remarks

Chair of the Board of Governors Cindy TRIPP ’82 followed Judith with official greetings from the Board and thanks to our community, telling the story of the wing’s humble beginnings. Read full remarks

Celebrating 150 years in one year

We came together on September 27, 2016 to kick off a year’s worth of celebrations. On September 12, 2017 – our official birthday – students joined staff and invited guests mid-morning for a ribbon cutting as we officially opened our new wing, built by our generous community. The rest of the day was all party for students, then the full community celebrated the new building at a big birthday evening bash.
