Margaret DeROCHE Derry '64
Author, artist, and global scholar
When cattle breeder Margaret Derry decided to get her PhD, she did not just complete her doctorate. She brought animal breeding into the field of history.
Margaret is the author of 12 books, a professor at the University of Guelph and an artist who brings the natural world to the canvas. In her writing, Margaret has grappled with the ways culture and genetics intersect and come into conflict, and explored questions of authenticity, purpose and science as they relate to animals across history. She created several seminal works of scholarship, including
Masterminding Nature: The Breeding of Animals, and
Horses in Society: A Story of Animal Breeding and Marketing Culture, 1800-1920, that have influenced academics across the globe.
