This winter, a group of students visited the Hospital for Sick Children organized by paediatric respirologist and BSS parent Dr. Indra Narang, where they explored the diverse career paths and cutting-edge research in healthcare.
The group began their day by learning from a diverse team of experts: cardiologists, respirologists, child life specialists and research associates. By sharing their personal journeys, these professionals showed students that a career in healthcare requires not only academic knowledge, but also passion and persistence. Dr. Reshma Amin, Director of the Long-term Ventilation Program and also a BSS parent, shared details of her work on sleep medicine and offered insights into how clinical research directly transforms patient care.
The tour continued through the hospital’s specialized labs, including stem cell and imaging facilities. In the simulation lab, the group observed how doctors and nurses can practice complex procedures using innovative technology. Students also witnessed the empathy required to treat the hospital’s youngest patients.
This visit, facilitated by members of our parent community, gave the group an insight into the day-to-day workings of a leading Canadian hospital. By bridging the gap between school and the professional world, these students can see how their academic knowledge is applied in a clinical setting as they imagine their place within the future of healthcare.
