The Nerve to Lead: An Evening with Dr. Martha Piper

On April 20, BSS alumnae heard from Dr. Martha Piper, co-author of Nerve: Lessons on Leadership from Two Women Who Went First, in conversation with Christine FARRUGIA ’99.
Dr. Piper spoke about serendipity and how we respond when opportunities arise, encouraging attendees to trust their capabilities and step into challenges with confidence. She spoke about nerve as taking action in the face of fear, and reflected on her time as President and Vice-Chancellor of UBC, sharing that leadership requires both grit and grace.

The conversation also highlighted the importance of mentors and sponsors, and the idea that while balance matters, we don’t need to “have it all” at once. Attendees then reflected in small groups on what resonated most and how they can bring more nerve into their own lives.

Thank you to the BSS Alumnae Association Executive’s Mentorship & Connection Committee for spearheading this impactful event.
