Connecting Through Language

By turning abstract vocabulary into a tangible, creative project, our hands-on approach to Grade 8 French helps students build confidence and meaningful connections right from the start.
In class, students kicked off their opening unit, Mes Réseaux ("My Networks"), with an engaging, tactile flip-book exercise designed to explore personal identity and community. Using prompts such as “J’adore…” and “4 mots qui me décrivent…” (or creating their own), students crafted personalized French mini-books to introduce themselves. After refining their grammar and spelling with peer and teacher feedback, students shared their work with classmates before displaying the flip-books in the hallway for the entire school community to peruse.

This interactive assignment is just the beginning. Mes Réseaux encourages students to reflect on how they communicate within their networks of family and friends, culminating in an action-oriented debate on the merits of social media and online versus offline social time. By grounding language acquisition in self-expression, collaboration and physical creation, Grade 8 students are actively using their French skills to share who they are and connect with the world around them.
