Bringing Biology to Life

By combining physical modelling, digital explorations, clinical tools and expert guest speakers, Grade 5 scientists discovered how the human body’s organ systems work together to keep us healthy.
In the Design Tech Lab, students rotated through hands-on stations where they built working models of lungs, tracked simulated blood flow and navigated digital tours of the digestive system. These interactive activities were designed to help students learn to identify key organs, and explain how the heart pumps blood, the lungs exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide and the digestive system breaks down food and absorbs nutrients. Ultimately, they were able to describe how these systems work together to deliver oxygen and nutrients to cells and eliminate waste.

This experiential learning was enhanced by visits from parent healthcare professionals, who brought real-world clinical contexts into the classroom. One guest speaker introduced cardiology stations where students listened to heartbeats, monitored oxygen levels, measured blood pressure, practiced using Doppler devices and sketched anatomical heart diagrams. Later, Dr. Erin Watson, Deputy Chief of Dentistry at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, led an interactive session on oral anatomy, hygiene and the immune system, leading into a partner activity where students tested the pH level of their mouths.

Through discussion, experimentation, observation and technology, Grade 5 students experienced science from every angle.
