Grade 3 students used a powerful metaphor to explore what it means to belong to an inclusive classroom community, blending media literacy, oral communication and social-emotional learning.
Starting with a discussion on their shared classroom agreements, students watched a thought-provoking video centered on the concept of a "table" as a place of gathering and connection. Following the screening, the class engaged in a rich dialogue reflecting on what their own classroom table should look like, sound like and feel like. Students shared their perspectives orally, considering who they would welcome to their table and how each person could actively contribute to a supportive environment.
To deepen their reflection, the students translated their rich discussions into thoughtful written pieces. By integrating media analysis with spoken and written expression, this activity not only met Grade 3 language curriculum expectations but also cultivated empathy, collaboration and a shared sense of responsibility. Through this active exploration of perspective-taking, our young learners discovered that building a community starts with making sure everyone has a seat at the table.
