When girls see what’s possible and believe they can lead, the world transforms.
This is a core belief of philanthropist Stu Lang, and the impetus behind the BSS Lang Scholar Program. This unique leadership program — made possible by a transformational $6.1 million gift from Mr. Lang — serves as a catalyst for social change. BSS Lang Scholars will enter the world and use their skills to break down barriers and unlock opportunities for women everywhere.
-Dr. Angela Terpstra, Head of School
Teaching girls to be leaders has been central to the BSS mission from day one. With this incredibly generous donation, the ability to train the female leaders of tomorrow has been super-charged.
Each year, up to 15 students are selected for this program designed to inspire tomorrow’s female changemakers.
Lang Scholars are distinguished not only by their athletic and academic achievements, but also by their strong character, leadership and commitment to service. Athletics is a powerful foundation for discipline, resilience and teamwork. As athletes, Lang Scholars lead by example, motivating their teammates, modeling integrity on and off the field and fostering a positive team culture. Beyond their teams, they are active participants in and contributors to their communities, using their skills to make a meaningful difference. They also demonstrate academic excellence — an essential skill for leaders who are critical thinkers and problem solvers.
Program Pillars
Our Lang Scholars benefit from incredible leadership enrichment opportunities that fall within three pillars.
Mentorship
Lang Scholars will have the opportunity to engage in one-on-one mentorship with inspiring alumnae leaders, as well as mentor younger students.
Leadership Enrichment
Students engage in six to eight leadership enrichment sessions per year, in addition to a weekend retreat. Programming includes workshops, guest speakers, lunch and learns and more.
Service
Female leaders thrive when they find meaning while collaborating on an impactful project. Lang Scholars design and participate in a service project each year they are in the program.
Stu Lang’s $6.1 million donation to fund the Lang Scholar Program is the largest gift ever to a Canadian girls' school to create a new generation of female leaders.
A philanthropic investment of this magnitude cements BSS as a trailblazer in girls’ education, and underscores our strong belief in the power of women as leaders. It is our hope that the Lang Scholar Program will attract a diverse group of applicants from across Canada, who will go on to make a positive impact on the world.
