BSS students are engaging in rigorous, hands-on learning across subjects — from scientific inquiry and design innovation to artistic exploration — while building skills and confidence beyond the classroom.
Here are some examples from the Junior, Middle and Senior Schools.
In Grade 4, students are observing the journey of a caterpillar as it transforms into a butterfly. In the Atelier, the students noticed gold at the top of the chrysalis and used watercolours, pastels and tracing with gold leaf to create their own images of chrysalises and butterflies. This learning connects to their Investigative Research (science and social studies) unit on habitats and communities, as they explore the important ecological role that caterpillars and butterflies play locally.
As part of their introduction to lab safety, Grade 7 students extracted DNA from strawberries using a simple method that employs common materials such as dish detergent, salt, water and coffee filters. The activity gave them the chance to practice proper safety procedures while learning how scientists isolate DNA in a simple, hands-on way.
In Design Technology, Grade 11 and 12 students are blending creativity and technology in a chocolate mold project. After sketching ideas and conducting a consumer analysis, they will 3D model and print their designs, then use a vacuum former to shape food-safe plastic into custom molds for chocolate pouring. Through this process, students will explore material science while building skills in design thinking, digital fabrication and project management.
Students are also discovering their passions by trying a wide range of co-curricular activities, from sports to music to leadership.
Fall athletics are off to a great start with students trying out for field hockey, soccer, cross country, swimming and more. Grade 1 - 6 students are also participating in a weekly multi-sport program during Community Time, trying out new sports like lacrosse and taekwondo, while building their confidence and athletic skills.
The annual Club Fair showcased our extensive range of student-run clubs and affinity groups, on topics as diverse as literature, design, business, STEM and social and environmental justice.
Students in Grades 6, 7, 9 and 12 are participating in grade trips over the coming week, where they will engage in challenging and exciting activities, strengthen their grade connections and make lasting memories.
16 students are heading on their Silver Duke of Ed canoe journey this week. They will paddle, portage and hike through the wilderness of the Temagami backcountry, and have the opportunity to meet with an Elder of the Teme-Augama Anishnabai.
In late November and early December, exchange students from Australia and Japan will join BSS, sharing their unique cultures and participating in school traditions like Nativity and Festival of Carols.
Auditions for this year’s choir program and theatre productions are also underway. We can’t wait to see our students express their creativity on the stage!
