At The Bishop Strachan School, Canada’s leading independent boarding school for girls, Grade 8 - 12 students from around the world find more than a place to live. They discover a vibrant, supportive community where they can learn and grow.
Boarding at BSS enriches the Day school experience, combining academic excellence with life skills development, well-being and leadership opportunities. In this safe and nurturing home away from home, boarders gain confidence, independence and lifelong friendships, while exploring Toronto and preparing for success in university and beyond.
Leadership in Boarding takes many forms, from formal roles to community activities. The Boarding Council leads by example, organizing events and partnerships that shape the boarding experience and strengthen connections with nearby schools.
Well-Being
Boarders enjoy fitness classes, outdoor education, team sports and well-being programs led by staff and experts. On-campus facilities (including fitness and wellness centres, plus yoga and dance studios) support healthy, active living.
Independence in Our World-Class City
Toronto is our extended classroom. Age-appropriate off-campus activities (think: concerts, art exhibits, sports events, outdoor adventures) help girls safely explore, build confidence and develop independence.
Personal Life Management
We offer sessions on study skills, time management, arts, literature, cooking and more. Structured study time and access to tutors ensure boarders stay on track academically.
Community
Boarders form lifelong friendships in a close-knit environment. Through multi-age “families,” Monday Night Dinners and student-led councils, they experience belonging, cross-grade connections and leadership opportunities.
Safe at Home
With dedicated staff, strong safety measures and 24/7 support, families can feel confident their daughters are cared for. Structured routines gradually expand as girls grow, offering both security and independence.
What life looks like in Boarding
Learning to Lead
The Boarding Council, led by the Head Boarder and composed of members with formal leadership roles, sets the tone and spirit for Boarding during the year. All Grade 12 boarders are considered leaders and role models. There are also other leadership opportunities through various Boarding committees and within the broader Day School.
Daily Routines
Boarding life is structured to support students’ academic success and well-being. A typical weekday consists of classes, study time, self-directed time or other activities in the evenings, and family duties. On weekends, Boarders participate in activities such as Community Days, House Games and field trips.
Unstoppable Life Skills Series
Sunday nights are devoted to skill-building workshops on topics such as cooking, self-care, sexual health, time management, budgeting and more.
Exploring the City and Beyond
Living in the heart of Toronto allows boarders to explore the local neighbourhood, the city beyond and other communities. Some off-campus adventures have included Canada’s Wonderland, the Toronto Islands, Kensington Market, Niagara Falls and Quebec City.
Spaces that Foster Connection and Belonging
The newly-renovated Boarding Commons offers a bright, welcoming space for boarders to connect and collaborate in their living area. Students also have access to campus facilities such as the Fitness Centre, yoga and dance studios, Learning Commons and Wellness Centre.
