Members of the BSS Senior Field Hockey team traveled to Barbados to train on international turf and participate in a cultural program designed to foster athletic excellence and global citizenship.
During their action-packed week, students refined their field hockey skills and focused on athletic development through specialized training and competition. They participated in clinics led by coaches and applied their skills in matches against local teams. These opportunities honed their agility and coordination skills, while reinforcing teamwork and communication on the field.
This athletic focus was complemented by a presentation on leadership in sports at the Barbados Olympic Association. Experts spoke to students about perseverance in sports and the relationship between athletic achievement and global responsibility, reinforcing grit and ethical citizenship as the key to success both on and off the field.
Stepping away from the turf, the team engaged in environmental conservation efforts. A visit to Pile Bay gave them the opportunity to study the marine environment and learn about sustainable fishing practices from the Ministry of Fisheries. This study came to life during a tour of the local market, where they observed how these practices affect environmental preservation. Their discovery of the island continued as the team explored its rich history during a guided tour of landmarks, immersing themselves in local arts and traditions.
By successfully blending sports training with experiential learning in the local community, this opportunity enabled students to develop the foundational traits of leadership, curiosity, grit and ethical citizenship.
