Learn More. About Academics.

At BSS, we believe girls can change the world - and it begins with how they learn.
That’s why we use research-based teaching strategies proven to work for girls. We not only equip our students with core academic knowledge and skills; we empower them to become capable, impactful changemakers.

With a strong academic foundation and opportunities to ask bold questions and solve real-world problems, BSS students become curious, resilient learners. They learn to speak for themselves and lead others. And they grow into compassionate and ethical citizens. We call this the Signature of a BSS Girl.

  • How We Teach

At BSS, learning is driven by inquiry. Our students investigate, experiment, research and reflect. They apply concepts to gain deep understandings of issues that are relevant to them.

Our research-based approach weaves inquiry with direct instruction, discussion, project work and experiential education. Positive relationships with teachers and peers help students feel seen, valued and empowered to grow. From Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12, they are active participants in their learning. They don’t just memorize answers; they work together, ask thoughtful questions and learn from constructive feedback.
  • What Our Students Learn

Our unique framework aligns with and enhances the Ontario Curriculum. Academic enrichment, experiential learning and co-curricular opportunities nurture students’ intellectual, social, emotional, physical, spiritual and ethical growth.

BSS students learn core academic skills including numeracy, literacy, research, critical thinking, communication and digital literacy. They connect ideas across disciplines, engage with diverse perspectives, build the skills to take action — and discover the joy of learning along the way.

JK - Grade 12: From Curiosity to Mastery

In the Junior School (Junior Kindergarten to Grade 6), students engage in meaningful investigations and projects that build a strong academic foundation in mathematics, literacy and research.

In Grades 7 and 8, students tackle more complex problems with a global lens, and deepen their critical thinking skills. Embracing the growth and challenges of early adolescence, they encounter new perspectives and are empowered to take risks.

In Grades 9 to 12, we offer challenging, rigorous learning experiences in more than 100 credit courses. BSS graduates are well-prepared for post-secondary with excellent critical thinking, analytical and research skills.

Advanced Placement courses offer an even deeper academic challenge with university-level material and opportunities to conduct original research. Students gain valuable transferable skills - like writing, time management and communication - no matter which post-secondary path they take.

Dr. Kristen Clarke, Dean of Teaching and Learning

At BSS, we don't simply cover curriculum, we uncover curriculum. Using an inquiry-based approach, our students ask critical questions to challenge their thinking and expand their ideas.

Vanessa Vanclief, Middle School Humanities Teacher

Our students develop strong reading habits, explore issues from a variety of perspectives, critically analyze different sources, and learn to research responsibly and communicate effectively.
