Academics

At BSS, we do things differently. Our challenging inquiry-based program is based on the latest educational research about how girls learn.
Students at BSS learn core academic skills, such as numeracy, literacy, research, critical thinking, communication, global citizenship and digital literacy. But our students don’t stop with foundational learning; they use that foundation as a springboard to generate new, creative ideas. Our unique research-based approach, the Culture of Powerful Learning, both aligns with and enhances the Ontario curriculum. Experiential learning, co-curricular opportunities and academic enrichment nurture students’ intellectual, social, emotional, physical, spiritual and ethical growth.

Learning at BSS is inquiry-based because we know that this type of learning sticks. It motivates and inspires our students to go deeper. Inquiry-based learning involves students undertaking in-depth projects. Empowered to follow their curiosity, they ask increasingly complex questions to gain a multi-faceted understanding of a real issue. They not only gain fundamental subject knowledge; they learn why it matters. BSS students are active learners and critical thinkers. At all levels, from kindergarten to Grade 12, students ask probing questions and work collaboratively. They take risks and sometimes fail - the most powerful learning of all.

By discovering the world around them, BSS students go beyond understanding. They apply their knowledge to make real change. They get to know themselves. They become independent lifelong learners, confident and self-assured. They learn to speak for themselves and to lead others. They grow into compassionate and ethical citizens. We call this the Signature of a BSS Girl.

  • Inquiry with an equity mindset

BSS students inquire through the lens of equity. They consider who is impacted by the issues they are studying and whose voice is heard. They learn to identify and dismantle barriers to inclusion. By tackling real problems and working toward innovative solutions, they contribute to envisioning and creating a more just society. Our faculty consider the dimensions of diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging in everything they do, from culturally responsive teaching methods to classroom and curriculum design.

In the Junior School (Junior Kindergarten to Grade 6), inspired by the Reggio Emilia Approach®, students engage in investigations and projects that build a strong academic foundation in mathematics, literacy and research.

In the Middle School grades (Grades 7 and 8), students hone these core academic skills. They learn to think critically, ask good questions and solve challenging problems. They tackle collaborative projects that combine subject areas.

In the Senior School grades (Grades 9 to 12), students continue to learn about themselves and their capabilities through rigorous, challenging learning experiences. They are well-prepared for university with strong critical thinking, analytical and research skills.

    Where girls lead

These innovative learning experiences happen in the context of an inclusive girls’ school. Girls are leaders in the classroom, in student government, on sports teams and clubs, and in every aspect of school life. As a result, they’re more likely to take risks, speak their minds and develop a strong sense of self.

Dr. Kristen Clarke, Dean of Teaching and Learning

At BSS, we don't simply cover curriculum, we uncover curriculum. Using an inquiry-based equity-minded approach, our students ask critical questions to challenge their thinking and expand their ideas with the goal of breaking down barriers for women, girls and all those who experience systemic discrimination.

We support our students to develop strong reading habits, explore issues from a variety of perspectives, critically analyze different types of sources, research responsibly, and communicate effectively.
