Blazing a trail for women in the church

Bishop Victoria MATTHEWS ‘72 has broken new ground for women in the Anglican Church since becoming the first Canadian female Bishop in 1994.
Her struggle to gain acceptance as an equal within a community that was resistant to female priests has resulted in tremendous progress for women who, like her, are called to serve.

If God is calling me, the Church can’t stop it from happening.
Her faith in that calling drove her on, and her work has taken her around the world, helping the disadvantaged and working to improve and strengthen the Church. She has been on the vanguard of progress within the Church and a symbol for women everywhere.
