BSS Student Embraces Global Learning Opportunities
Grade 12 student, Omara D '26, is channeling her passion for global issues into active youth leadership as a member of The Centre for Global Education Youth Advisory Council.
Each month, Omara meets with fellow student leaders from around the world. These sessions are not only a platform for discussion; they are an opportunity to build a global network of resources and connections aimed at achieving sustainable development goals in the community and beyond.
In December, Omara brought this global perspective home by visiting Grade 10 Civics classes to share her policy and advocacy insights. Beyond offering students tools on how to be an effective leader, she left the class with the message of global interdependence, highlighting that local actions resonate internationally.
Rita Gravina, Director of Global Learning, describes the value of the program: “At BSS, students like Omara can engage in opportunities that take them far beyond the classroom. These experiences help them appreciate diverse perspectives and grow as ethical and global citizens.” These initiatives also have an impact on the BSS community, as Rita notes. “Students return to BSS ready to collaborate, share their insights and inspire peers learning about government, citizenship and advocacy.”
For Omara, leadership is defined by passion, not age. Her engagement, both at BSS and beyond, is fueled by her belief that advocacy is rooted in "recognizing the power you have as a person." Along with her participation in The Centre for Global Education Youth Advisory Council, she volunteers with organizations such as the Young Politicians of Canada and the Indigenous and Northern Affairs Policy Advisory Council, with whom she aims to present a paper to Parliament in February on water insecurity. Her commitment also extends globally through The Little Christene's Foundation in Jamaica, an organization she co-founded with her mother that provides educational resources and financial assistance to single parent families.
