BSS teachers model lifelong learning, expanding their expertise through advanced study and hands-on exploration of emerging technologies and pedagogy. Their summer work reflects a commitment to staying at the forefront of education, ensuring students benefit from innovative, future-ready learning experiences.
This summer, technology and humanities teacher Tania Kitchell and Idea Lab Technician Adiola Palmer collaborated to explore 3D printing, plaster mold making and slip casting. Their project culminated in the firing and glazing of a moon-shaped bowl. The purpose was to deepen their understanding of production molding, commonly used in industry, while experimenting with different mediums of making.
Mathematics teacher Amzad Hosein attended the Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing (CEMC) Summer Conference for Math and Computer Science Educators. He also earned his Math Honours Specialist in July, experimented with AI-powered spreadsheets for gradebook design, and gained hands-on experience with Arduino, coding and electronic circuits.
Technology Department Head Danny Schryburt participated in the Summer AI Institute at Lakefield College School in June. This three-day conference was an exciting professional development experience for teachers and school leaders looking to explore the role of artificial intelligence in education. Following this learning, over the summer, Danny built a grow light system that automatically adjusts to sunlight levels, which he plans to incorporate into a greenhouse construction project in Grade 11 Technological Design. He also prototyped an “Arduboy” (a homemade version of a Nintendo Gameboy) for use in his Grade 12 Technological Design course. Currently, he is exploring an AI-powered object detection camera system running on a Raspberry Pi, an experimental project that may inform future classroom applications.
Dr. Alana Bell (Research and Learning Commons Specialist ), Diana Kim (STEM teacher), Lynette Thomas-Woo (Grade 4 teacher), Laura Poce (Vice Principal of Student Success), Christina Mami (Senior Director of Technology) and Annette Chiu (English teacher) also attended the conference at LCS.
