A Season of Creativity

From exploring the vibrant arts scene in London, to learning design techniques in workshops, and showcasing musical and theatrical skills through performances, the arts are alive at BSS.
A group of senior students returned recently from a week-long trip to London to learn about visual arts and design. They explored iconic neighbourhoods and the Warner Bros. Harry Potter Studios and took in a showing of Les Mis in the West End. They also participated in a full-day life drawing workshop and an upcycling workshop led by alumna Clara CHU ’13, in which they made bags using items they had brought from home.

Our recent Middle and Senior School Remembrance Day Chapel service featured moving musical performances, including a rendition of In Flanders Fields by the Senior Choir and Vocal class.

Rehearsals and preparations are well underway for the Grade 8-12 musical Chicago, premiering in February. Makeup artist Estelle PHILLIPS ’14 returned to BSS to lead a stage makeup workshop for the Production Council. She shared makeup charts, guided students through character design and lighting considerations, and explored how 1920s beauty trends shaped the show’s signature look.

Grade 1 - 6 students are having a blast rehearsing for the Junior School Fun Plus musicals, Anything Is Possible and Cinderella, which will be staged for cast members’ families in early December.

Looking ahead to the holiday season, we’re excited for the Festival of Carols at Grace Church, the 97th production of The Nativity, and the Middle School and Junior School Winter Concerts.
