Learning About the History of Residential Schools
On march 17, Grade 8 students went on a virtual field trip to the former Mohawk Institute, a residential school operating from 1831 to 1970 outside of nearby Brantford, Ontario.
The video tour featured an intimate look at students' experiences and firsthand accounts from Survivors. A powerful debrief was hosted by very knowledgeable and candid cultural interpreters from the Woodland Culture Centre.
This field trip was part of the students' larger exploration of early treaties, the Indian Act, residential schools, and the legacy of these policies. We are grateful to have had the opportunity to tour the centre, and learn more about this important piece of Canadian history and gain a deeper understanding of why Canada’s reconciliation with Indigenous peoples is so crucial.
