How our Curriculum Challenges Girls to Excel

The Bishop Strachan School offers an enriching academic experience that combines rigorous programs with an open and inspiring learning environment. In our Senior School, this approach is taken to the next level as your child prepares for success in university and beyond.
Students develop advanced academic knowledge through challenging programs, while discovering their own interests and becoming confident and independent leaders. With a comprehensive curriculum, every student chooses their own path and is given the support to translate those passions into real-world success. Here’s a closer look at how our Senior School prepares girls for rewarding and meaningful futures.

A Culture of Powerful Learning

Our curriculum is based on advanced educational research. The program at our all-girls school encourages students to learn through inquiry and exploration, asking questions that tackle real-world problems and arriving at their own understanding. At BSS, we believe that these are essential qualities to lifelong success.

Through meaningful assignments, students become academically and politically engaged while gaining confidence in their own voices. They explore issues from a variety of global perspectives, critically analyze sources, research information and learn to contribute their own ideas effectively.

With co-curricular activities to complement the classroom experience, students in our Senior School find that there are opportunities to learn all around. An outdoor education program, international trips, service learning projects and school clubs are just some of the ways for students to discover new interests. By exploring the many paths on offer at BSS, students will be ready to step into the world with a strong understanding of who they are.

Advanced Programs and Electives

The Senior School program consists of more than 100 credit courses that include Advanced Placement courses and a wide range of electives. The core curriculum covers courses such as English, French, mathematics and chemistry. Electives are also available in business, technology, visual and media arts and more. In each area, students are taught to overcome obstacles, identify their strengths and appreciate the process of collaborating with others. Students learn to care about the world around them and find their own role in it as resilient and self-assured individuals.

Advanced Placement (AP) courses go beyond the Ontario curriculum at our high school for girls and explore university-level materials. BSS offers AP courses that provide an enriched learning experience in areas such as English and calculus, with the added opportunity to earn The Capstone Diploma. Our students receive strong results in AP exams that exceed international averages and confirm their readiness for university.

Focus on University Preparation

The Senior School program is geared towards preparing girls for successful futures at top-tier universities. One hundred per cent of BSS graduates are offered a placement at high-ranking universities and colleges in Canada and beyond. We not only want students to gain entry into university; we want to give them the tools they need to excel once they are there. That’s why we focus on building strong critical thinking, communication, analytical and research skills that will prepare them to tackle advanced academic challenges.

With strong college resumes that consist of AP credits, co-curricular activities, leadership positions, community projects and global experiences, our students are ready to advocate for themselves and their interests in higher education.
