The Value of Real-World Learning at Our All Girls School

An education at The Bishop Strachan School is about opening the minds and hearts of young girls as they learn to navigate an increasingly connected world. Through exposure to different disciplines, cultures and experiences, our students become intellectually curious global citizens.
At BSS, this development happens through an emphasis on real-world learning both inside and outside the classroom. Our curriculum encourages students to ask questions and participate in activities and projects that give them unique insight into the challenges facing both local and global communities. If you’re interested in giving your child the tools to succeed in today’s world, find out more about the value of learning at BSS.

Encouraging Academic Curiosity in the Classroom

The curriculum at BSS exposes students to new ways of thinking and gives them the space to develop their own ideas. This kind of inquiry-based learning builds on the belief that students are naturally inquisitive and keen to learn about the world in which they live. The goal is to encourage purposeful learning.

Students ask questions, conduct research and arrive at solutions to real-world problems. Through this process, girls don’t just absorb information; they ignite academic curiosity, confidence in their own faculties and a love of learning that will see them through their whole lives. Today, this kind of mindset is essential for young people who are hoping to lead change and make a real impact in their field.

Connecting With the Community

Real-world learning is not just about developing one’s intellectual capacities. It’s also about giving our students experiences that inform their understanding of the people around them. That’s why service learning is an integral part of the education at our all girls school

Our students have the opportunity to give back to their communities, finding a purpose larger than themselves as they take an active role in making the world a better place. Initiatives include volunteering at food banks, making jars of soup for senior citizens and distributing them through Meals on Wheels, collecting clothing and basic necessities for low-income families, and advocating for accessibility in our neighbourhood with CNIB. In the process, students develop compassion for others and a sense of reward outside of themselves. These kinds of experiences stick with our students and inspire them to lead positive change in the future.

Fostering a Global Mindset at Our All Girls School

In an increasingly interconnected world, global experiences are more important than ever to expand one’s opportunities for the future. At BSS, we aim to give our students the experiences needed to set them up for success both now and later in life.

Global trips are one way that we achieve this. Students in our high school for girls have the chance to go beyond their comfort zones by travelling outside their province and country. Travel is an experience that deepens learning, builds confidence and independence and opens new horizons for our girls.

While working on projects in international communities, students investigate important world issues and participate in diverse conversations outside of the regular curriculum. These can include arts and cultural explorations in London, home healthcare visits in Belize, care and conservation placements in the rainforests of Costa Rica and community engagement programs. These experiences bring our students one step closer to becoming ethical, open-minded and self-aware young people with the inspiration to take their skills around the world.
