How Our Middle School for Girls Supports Academic Growth

At The Bishop Strachan School, we believe academic growth is essential to the well-rounded growth of each of our students. Every year, BSS graduates are offered a placement at top-tier universities and colleges around the world. We want to do everything we can to ensure their utmost preparedness for their new academic endeavours.
BSS offers a number of unique program options that stem from our implementation of a STEAM curriculum. Students are involved in exciting interdisciplinary projects that challenge their creativity and unlock their problem-solving skills. Continue reading to learn more about the program options at each level that help promote academic growth.

Middle School Options Program

Our girls school in Ontario presents students with a strong academic foundation that includes staple STEAM courses such as English, Social Studies, French, Visual Arts classes and more. Grade 7 and 8 students have the option for accelerated courses in French and math, which reward them with Grade 9 credits by the end of Grade 8.

Another unique component of the Middle School curriculum is the Options program, which helps expand the academic growth at BSS. This popular program runs for nine sessions in the fall term, providing more than 15 activities to choose from. Activities include Wen-do, graphic design, dance, climbing, jewellery-making and stage combat, helping students pursue their interests and come into their own as individuals.

Senior School Electives Up for Exploration

Building off of the Middle School foundation, Senior School students also have a number of elective course options to choose from. With over 100 courses in Grades 9 to 12, students can continue exploring their passions while staying integrated into a challenging academic environment. Students inspired by the arts, curious about business or fascinated by technology can pursue their interests at BSS.

A diverse academic experience allows students to effectively prepare for their studies in university. Introductions to fields such as Kinesiology, Interdisciplinary Studies, Economics, Psychology and more allow students to get an idea of what topics they may want to follow while attending university. Additionally, exposure to a multitude of courses helps students develop their critical thinking skills while learning to appreciate their own personal strengths as well as those of their peers.

Global Learning at Our Middle School for Girls

Global Learning at BSS helps students foster their sense of belonging in the world while keeping an open mind toward other cultures. These initiatives at our private school for girls offer exploratory and immersive experiences such as co-curricular opportunities focused on real-world issues, community engagement programs and local and global workshops.

Values learned through diverse academic and extracurricular programs help set the stage for BSS student success. Global perspectives contribute to essential attributes of a Signature of a BSS Girl, including a growth mindset, ethical citizenship, curiosity, self-awareness, grit, voice and leadership. Working toward these attributes helps each BSS student build on their strengths to reach their goals and help make the world a better place.
