BSS Giving & Philanthropy
Though it may be a surprise to learn, BSS is a registered charity. We were built on philanthropy and have grown to be a formidable school through the enthusiastic participation of our families. As a not-for-profit, we raise funds from our caring community and transform them into valuable opportunities for current and future students – including the chance to attend BSS for girls who may otherwise be unable. Following in the footsteps of their generous families and our dedicated alumnae, our students work to support others near and far in creative and caring ways.
BSS Annual Fund
Doing good in the world starts with understanding ourselves, our potential and all the ways we can help others. It’s why the Signature of a BSS Girl was created and why we are intentional about blending academic excellence with strong values and character development. As students embrace the Signature attributes, they adopt a growth mindset as ethical citizens, becoming more confident and more compassionate.
The 2018-19 BSS Annual Fund is primed to take our culture of philanthropy to greater heights, with your help, as we honour the Signature of a BSS Girl and all the good it brings to our girls, our community and our world.
Grad Class Scholarship
Whether they’ve been at BSS since JK or just a few years, the girls in our graduating class look forward to a future ripe with possibility. And, each year before they graduate, they work hard, along with their parents, to leave a meaningful legacy. They raise money for the Graduating Class Scholarship, which helps fund a BSS education for girls facing financial barriers.
BSS Intersection: Building Momentum
The largest fundraising campaign in our long history has just come to a glorious end. Intersection had been growing in momentum since its launch in October 2014 and, thanks to the outpouring of support from all who love BSS, we raised more than $33 million. This means we were able to open an extraordinary new STEAM wing in September 2017, increase student access to the highest level of expertise and build our growing Financial Assistance program for families facing financial barriers. Thanks to our generous community for coming together for Intersection

When a donation of appreciated publicly traded securities is made to The Bishop Strachan School, the capital gains tax on the securities is eliminated when the securities are transferred directly to BSS.
You will also receive a donation receipt based on the full fair market value of the shares for the close of market on the day the securities are received by the school.
If you were to sell shares that you own to make a cash donation, you would receive a donation tax credit but you would be required to pay tax on your capital gains.
Through donating and directly transferring your publicly traded securities, you will receive the same tax credit for the value of the shares but you wouldn’t pay any tax on the transaction. Please see below for tax advantages chart.

Monthly Giving – Good for You, Good for the Girls!
Four Reasons to say “yes” to Monthly Giving:
- You can give smaller amounts every month that add up to a substantial gift at the end of the year, and you will receive one consolidated tax receipt each year.
- You provide BSS with sustained funding throughout the year, allowing the school to respond quickly to opportunities as they arise.
- Your monthly donation can be automatically charged to your credit card, making it convenient and effective.
- Once you sign up for a monthly gift, you will no longer receive donation reminders, which reduces paper consumption and postage cost.
For more information on how to become a monthly donor, contact Michelle Golfman, Director of Annual Giving and Constituent Relations at 416-483-4325, ext. 1875 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Langtry Society is the premiere giving club at BSS, named after founder Reverend John Langtry.
All donors who make cumulative gifts of $1,000+ and Old Girls who make cumulative gifts of $500+ throughout the school year are honoured as members of our Langtry Society.
Special benefits include recognition in our Annual Report and in our new wing, and invitations to events and reserved seating.
Thank you to the generosity of all of our Langtry Society Members each year who continue to ensure excellence in the education and experience of all of our students.
For more information on how to become a Langtry Society Member, contact Michelle Golfman, Director of Annual Giving and Constituent Relations at 416-483-4325, ext. 1875 or email@example.com.
The most common ways to arrange a planned gift are:
Charitable gift annuities enable you to make an immediate gift to BSS and receive guaranteed income for life.
Naming BSS as a beneficiary of your Will can, when properly planned, reduce the rate at which your estate is taxed. You may make a charitable bequest of a specific dollar amount, a percentage of your estate or the remainder of your estate after planning to care for your family and friends.
A gift of life insurance is a simple and straightforward way to make a modest commitment now that allows for a significant gift in the future.
You and other beneficiaries can receive income for life or for a set number of years. Donors will receive an immediate charitable income tax deduction, immediate income and relief from tax on capital gain. When the trust expires, the assets remaining in trust go to support the BSS mission.
As you consider your support of BSS, we are happy to send you information that can help you combine your financial planning with charitable giving. Give us a call!
