BSS Giving & Philanthropy
Though it may be a surprise to learn, BSS is a registered charity. We were built on philanthropy and have grown to be a formidable school through the enthusiastic participation of our families. As a not-for-profit, we raise funds from our caring community and transform them into valuable opportunities for current and future students – including the chance to attend BSS for girls who may otherwise be unable. Following in the footsteps of their generous families and our dedicated alumnae, our students work to support others near and far in creative and caring ways.

BSS Intersection: Building Momentum
The largest fundraising campaign in our long history is right now. Intersection has been growing in momentum since its launch in October 2014 and, thanks to the outpouring of support from all who love BSS, we anticipate reaching our goal of $35 million in spring 2017. This means we are in a position to open an extraordinary new building, increase student access to the highest level of expertise and build our growing Financial Assistance program for families facing financial barriers. Check out life at the Intersection.
BSS Annual Fund
Tuition fees cover the day-to-day expenses and operations related to the delivery of a BSS education. The BSS Annual Fund provides that extra margin of excellence. Participation in the Annual Fund – at any level – is vital to the sustainable foundation of the school, and benefits every single student at BSS. This is why we ask every member of the BSS community, every year, to give what they can to the Annual Fund. And everywhere you go on campus, you’ll find evidence of this kind support.
Our alumnae are out in the world making an important, positive impact. And, though they’re busy, they remain connected to BSS, engaging with their former classmates and teachers, returning to campus to tell their story to current students and generally keeping the spirit of BSS alive. Many have come full circle to support Intersection, making their mark – literally – on the fantastic new building that opens in spring 2017.
Grad Class Scholarship
Whether they’ve been at BSS since JK or just a few years, the girls in our graduating class look forward to a future ripe with possibility. And, each year before they graduate, they work hard, along with their parents, to leave a meaningful legacy. They raise money for the Graduating Class Scholarship, which helps fund a BSS education for girls facing financial barriers. Learn more about the Class of 2017 Grad Class Scholarship Fund.
As we celebrate 150 years of excellence in girls’ education, you’re invited to take advantage of a special opportunity to choose a little piece of BSS to call your own. With a pledge of $15,000 you can purchase one of 203 Milestones – engraved brushed stainless steel medallions, displayed in the terrazzo floor of our new atrium. Leave a lasting legacy at BSS, while helping build a space that announces the future of education and inspires our program of powerful learning for years to come.

When a donation of appreciated publicly traded securities is made to The Bishop Strachan School, the capital gains tax on the securities is eliminated when the securities are transferred directly to BSS.
You will also receive a donation receipt based on the full fair market value of the shares for the close of market on the day the securities are received by the school.
If you were to sell shares that you own to make a cash donation, you would receive a donation tax credit but you would be required to pay tax on your capital gains.
Through donating and directly transferring your publicly traded securities, you will receive the same tax credit for the value of the shares but you wouldn’t pay any tax on the transaction. Please see below for tax advantages chart.

Recurring Giving – Good for You, Good for the Girls!
Four Reasons to say “yes” to Recurring Giving:
- You can give smaller amounts every month that add up to a substantial gift at the end of the year, and you will receive one consolidated tax receipt each year.
- You provide BSS with sustained funding throughout the year, allowing the school to respond quickly to opportunities as they arise.
- Your monthly donation can be debited from your bank account automatically, or charged to a credit card, making it convenient and effective.
- Once you sign up for a recurring gift, you will no longer receive donation reminders, which reduces paper consumption and postage cost.
BSS is pleased to honour individuals at each of the following levels within The Langtry Society:
Patrons $5,000 – $9,999+
Partners $2,500 – $4,999
Associates $1,000 – $2,499
Langtry Society members support the school with an annual gift of $1,000 or more. The Society also includes alumnae who have graduated in the past 15 years, and make a gift of $500 or more.
Members of the Langtry Society receive invitations to special events throughout the year, as well priority listing in the annual donor listings.
The most common ways to arrange a planned gift are:
Bequests: Naming BSS as a beneficiary of your Will can, when properly planned, reduce the rate at which your estate is taxed. You may make a charitable bequest of a specific dollar amount, a percentage of your estate or the remainder of your estate after planning to care for your family and friends.
Life Insurance: A gift of life insurance is a simple and straightforward way to make a modest commitment now that allows for a significant gift in the future.
Charitable Gift Annuities: Charitable gift annuities enable you to make an immediate gift to BSS and receive guaranteed income for life.
Charitable Remainder Trusts and Gifts of Residual Interest: You and other beneficiaries can receive income for life or for a set number of years. Donors will receive an immediate charitable income tax deduction, immediate income and relief from tax on capital gain. When the trust expires, the assets remaining in trust go to support the BSS mission.
As you consider your support of BSS, we are happy to send you information that can help you combine your financial planning with charitable giving. Give us a call!
