Learning in a STEM Wonderland
Grade 7 and 8 students applied their understanding of design thinking, the scientific method, and engineering to create the whimsical world of Wonderland for the play Through the Looking Glass.
They created a realm of gravity-defying flowers and giant toadstools by first sketching out ideas and testing concepts such as centre of gravity, symmetry, form and function, and conversion. With support from the Design Technology Lab, they built props out of materials such as wood, cardboard, polymer clay, recycled paper and felt, using power tools, coping saws, drills, jigsaws, heat guns and more. Students applied their STEM learning to a real-world situation and built on their understanding of mathematical and scientific concepts in a fully integrated and collaborative way. They also considered the environmental impact of the process and materials they used, showing their environmental literacy.
