Learning Beyond the Classroom at Our All-Girls School

At The Bishop Strachan School, learning goes beyond the classroom. Students at BSS join a community with diverse interests and abilities, and experience  opportunities for enrichment at every turn. Through co-curricular activities, students develop resilience, confidence, and passion in trying new things and testing their capabilities. From arts to athletics to service learning to student leadership, there’s something for every student at BSS. Read on to learn more about how co-curricular activities bring a valuable dimension to the learning experience at BSS.

Inspiring New Passions in Students

Co-curricular activities help students discover their interests and explore their abilities in an encouraging space. Creative expression is a great way to do this. From Junior School to Grade 12, students can create and perform different art forms. Theatre, dance and choir are avenues for students to find their own voices, by taking a role on or behind the stage or using different media to create personal and meaningful works of art.

Whatever their interest, students find outlets to explore new passions. In our Middle School, students can take part in chamber strings, drama, Model United Nations, Maker Club, Speakers Union, or intramural sports. By giving students the freedom to try new things, BSS ignites a spirit of curiosity and discovery that will see them through later life.

Fostering Community Spirit

The value of teamwork is at the heart of many co-curricular activities at BSS. Students have the chance to connect with their peers over shared interests and develop their skills alongside one another. Through a wide selection of athletic teams, students can represent their school on the field, the court or the ice. The best part is the friendships formed when you win and lose together - an experience that translates into collaborative learning in the classroom.

Service learning at our girls school in Ontario takes community building one step further. BSS students find a purpose larger than themselves in giving back to others. Opportunities include peer-to-peer tutoring in elementary schools, volunteering at local food banks making homemade baked goods for local community organizations and assisting senior citizens. In the process, students develop compassion and awareness for the experiences of others.

Building Leadership and Communication Skills

An education at BSS allows students to become leaders, both inside and outside of the classroom. Sports teams, student councils, academic groups and community groups all give students a taste of leadership in the science Club, the Jewish Student Union, the Gender Sexuality Alliance and others.

In the process, students understand that their actions have the power to make a positive difference. Decision-making, confidence and communication skills are just a few of the qualities that these roles develop. At the same time, leadership positions encourage students to take pride in their school culture and inspire others. Students graduate from BSS with the experience and confidence to take on similar roles in later life.
